EMDR + IFS Therapy
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a type of therapy that helps us get to the root of distressing events from the past that you still carry with you today. It is not talk therapy. So instead of reliving your distressing experience when you talk about, we instead reprocess it with the use of bilateral stimulation (e.g. eye movements, or tapping) while you focus on the troubling event. You will feel a sense of calmness and clarity when we work through the distressing memory. Click here to learn more about EMDR.
What is IFS?
Internal Family Systems is a type of therapy that helps you understand the parts that make up your internal system. For example, here are some parts that often come up in AAPI and BIPOC women:
people pleasing part
high achieving part
anxious part
We explore these internal parts and why they exist, how they have been protecting you. In the IFS model, there are no bad parts and all parts are welcome. With IFS work you learn not to fight these parts but build a relationship with them. You also witness the parts that hold the pain and help relieve this heavy pain that it has been holding. Combining EMDR + IFS
Combining these two powerful therapies allows you to understand your internal system – the parts that were created to protect you from the pain of the distressing event that occurred. Relaxing your internal parts allows us to then work through the distressing event with EMDR reprocessing.
Together, this creates deeper, faster, and lasting healing.
Who Is A Best Fit for EMDR + IFS?
If you have had…

Chronic distressing experiences
Feeling pressured by family expectations
Eldest daughter issues – parentified child
These are just some of the difficult experiences that will be clinically helpful to integrate IFS parts work with EMDR. However, you can do EMDR +IFS with any distressing experience.
